Role Outline: Steering Group Member

Role Outline: Steering Group Member

Title: Steering Group Member, Greens Organise
Time Commitment: Estimated ~4 hours/week
Term Duration: 1 year

Who We Are

Greens Organise (GO) is a grassroots, volunteer-led network of (mainly) Green Party members committed to building a movement rooted in democratic practice, social, economic, and environmental justice. Founded in September 2024, GO exists to – among other things – amplify voices often overlooked within the party; working class, global majority, trans, disabled, and other marginalised communities. We do this through organising, education, and collective action. Our work is guided by our Constitution, our founding document the Manchester Manifesto, and principles of transparency, inclusion, and transformative eco-socialist politics.

Purpose of the Steering Group

The Steering Group is made up of 12 individuals elected from among GO’s membership. The Steering Group exists to develop the organisation and facilitate member activity.

The Steering Group will operate with a certain level of autonomy, but all of its decisions and work will be geared towards facilitating, enabling and empowering the activities of GO members.

In sum, this role will encompass movement-building, capacity building, activity and action as well as administrative support. This role requires leadership, collaboration, inclusivity, and commitment to grassroots democracy.

The first elected Steering Group

As August 2025 will be the first time GO elects a Steering Group, the first Steering Group will spend large amounts of their time building and developing our organisation. Whilst lots of things about GO may look shiny and polished, we have a lot of work to do to build processes and ways of working, as mostly GO has been functioning semi-informally up to this point.

It is expected that the first Steering Group will coordinate a number of central projects, including building vital organisational structures, processes, and capacity to harness volunteer power centrally, and enable distributed member activity around the country.

Developing and organising local groups and the structures that enable them to function semi-autonomously, will be a key mission. It is not expected that Steering Group members will themselves be responsible for running their local groups (although of course they are encouraged to engage with them and may wish to do some of the on-the-ground organising), rather the Steering Group will focus on building the central capacity and resources that enable all local groups to function.

No later than the 27th September the Steering Group will coordinate GO’s first ever Annual General Meeting (AGM) as per sections 5.3-5.15 of GO’s constitution

Roles within the Steering Group

The Steering Group members will each be elected without a portfolio, and share collective responsibility for the activities of the Steering Group as set out in 6.1-6.3 of GO’s constitution

Once elected, the Steering Group will also elect several roles from amongst its 12 members. These members will retain the collective responsibilities for SG work, but will take the lead on some respective duties.

  • Two co-chairs (at least one of whom shall be a woman or non-binary person)
  • A Safeguarding Officer
  • A Compliance Officer
  • A Treasurer

For information on these responsibilities, see section 6.7 of the constitution

Person specification

Our elections will be run openly and democratically, and whatever your background or skillset, if you decide to run you will have the opportunity to make your case to GO’s membership. These bullet points should be taken as indicative of the types of attributes that will be useful to thrive in this position.

  • Demonstrated commitment to eco-socialism, grassroots democracy, anti-oppression, and movement building.
  • Experience in organising, community-building, or leadership within political, campaigning, or civil society settings
  • Comfortable collaborating across diverse backgrounds and viewpoints, and adept at resolving conflict constructively
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a focus on clarity, inclusion, and outreach
  • Ability to commit significant time to Steering Committee duties, including meetings and if possible public activities.
  • Familiarity with digital tools (e.g., Zoom, Slack, Google Workspace, WhatsApp, email) and ability to learn new platforms.

If you have an interest in building Greens Organise, you are encouraged to consider running for GO’s Steering Group, although there are many, many helpful ways to build our organisation and our movement which do not require sitting on the Steering Group.

Candidacies are particularly welcomed from those who are working-class, global majority, trans, neurodivergent, disabled, D/deaf, and LGBTQ+

If you have any questions about the process of election, email ero@greensorganise.uk.

If you have any questions which you would like to address to Greens Organise’s Interim Steering Group (the group empowered to build membership and hold GO’s first elections), they can be reached on info@greensorganise.uk .
